My kind of Sunday Roast…

What’s more quintessentially English than a plate full of goose fat potatoes, a slab of roast and a puff pastry pudding falling to the side?

Sunday Roast is the trademark dish of  London and when anyone visits the UK my list of suggestions usually includes a pub of choice for a Sunday Roast session.

But with hundreds of pubs around the capital each offering their – varyingly successful – take on one of the nation’s favourite dishes, it’s hard to know where to start.

I don’t think a roast has been to be about guzzled gravy and how much goose fat you can squeeze in one meal.  If a dish has top quality meat, generous portions, offer ample good quality accompaniments and is situated in a great environment – then I think that’s all you need. I also am going a little off book and saying it doesn’t have to be in a pub. I just like the idea of friends gathering together over a hearty meal.

Yesterday (Sunday), I went to The Dorsett Hotel in Shepherds Bush. I had spent the day shopping with friends and we all decided to stroll on over to The Dorsett Hotel for a drink and meal. The restaurant is located on the ground floor and is called Pictures. It is a contemporary brasserie style restaurant with varied menu, which was great.

In true English style, being a Sunday we all opted for the steak and sides. It was a 28-day dry aged strip-lion served with Portobello mushrooms, cherry vine tomatoes, skinny fries and we also got a side of buttered spinach. Although what we had was not technically a roast – it was still a lovely, good quality piece of meat with our choice of sides. A lovely meal that ended up being the same price as a pub standard roast.

I also started with the goat’s cheese and beetroot salad, which I am so excited to go back for already. It was pickled beetroot, grilled goats cheese, basil pesto, baby red chard. The goat’s cheese was baked with brown sugar and I cannot begin to describe how delicious this was!

Yep, dessert was involved. Apple tart with vanilla bean ice cream and Creme Brulee cheesecake with berry compote.

Make sure you have a pre drink at their cocktail bar called ‘Jin’. It is super chic and a great place to unwind.

After speaking with the chef, everything on the menu is made in house using fresh ingredients delivered by our carefully selected suppliers. Pictures isn’t just a dinner joint, they do breakfast and lunches (so something to keep in mind when exploring Westfield).

So re-think this weekends Sunday roast and make sure you at The Dorsett to your ‘to do’ list. You won’t be disappointed!
