Whether it’s a weekend escape to the Southern Highlands or a 90 minute day trip from Sydney, a visit to Eschalot is a must do for all Sydney siders.
The award winning restaurant is found in Berrima, a short drive from Bowral. It is hard to miss the gorgeous sandstone, heritage building propped up on a hill on the main strip in town. Out the back is the restaurant’s garden, where they grow fresh produce found on the menu. The open fire place and carpeted clothes compliment the crisp Mittagong weather.
The Chef Hat prestige is definitely felt through the polished service and whiten linen table clothes. However, a warm, unpretentious touch is felt through offering BYO wine from Wednesday-Friday.
The French-Australian menu is simple enough to please everyone and is forever changing with new dishes being developed with the seasons in mind. A few of the local favourites have stuck around as signatures including Twice baked goat’s cheese souffle, aerated fig leaf, roasted figs, truffle honey & pear, Thirlmere duck – confit leg, roasted breast, turnip puree, egg & turnip ravioli, lavender and the Dark chocolate brulee, mandarin & grapefruit.
A must do this winter.
